Foraging wild peas.

Sara Sanders | Founder & Designer

Growing up surrounded by prairie grasses and farmland in rural northern California, Sara developed an affinity for gardens. She was especially drawn to the flowers that her mom grew on the farm and her grandma’s garden in the city.

Nestled among the vegetables were elegant gladiolus, sweet peas, amaryllis, ranunculus, tulips, dahlias, and zinnias. The gardens were unfussy but lush, abundant, and had organic shapes to maximize space and informality. Wild roses, geranium, spirea, mimosa, and blackberries vines created little vignettes where she would spend her daydream hours. Sara would spend an enormity of time studying the plants and picking wildflowers and grasses to add to her bouquets from the garden and she would share her little masterpieces with her mom.

In college, Sara initially studied horticulture and landscape design. In her studies, she learned about plant identification, propagation, irrigation, as well as soil chemistry, pest management, and design. While learning the technical skills was interesting, the magic, art, and intrigue that attracted her to plants and flowers was lost. She went on to study art and literature and how these forms of human expression are impacted by culture and religion. Sara views floral design as a true art form and has a painterly style blending and transitioning colors with sophistication and style. Sara has her BA in Humanities and Religious Studies from California State University, Sacramento.

Sara had her start in floristry at a very early age but started doing weddings for friends and family in 2001. Sara is a semi self-taught designer but highly values continuing her education and learning from formal floral institutions and from professionals in the industry that she admires.

Her passion for all that is impermanent, beautiful, emotive, fragrant, and transformative is evident in her floral works.
